Services

As specified in Section 705(c) of the Rehabilitation Act, the SILC, in conjunction with the designated state unit (DSU), jointly develops, monitors, reviews, and evaluates a three year State Plan for Independent Living (SPIL). The SPIL directly addresses issues important to the advancement of Independent Living in South Carolina.

The SILC also oversees the direction and expenditure of Title VII Part B funds as directed by the Rehabilitation Act to expand the network of Centers for Independent Living (CILs) in South Carolina. CILs are non-profit organizations that offer five core services in primary areas that are vital to the advancement of Independent Living. The core services are:

  • Information & Referral
  • Peer Support
  • Independent Living Skills Training
  • Systems and Individual Advocacy
  • Nursing Home & Youth Transition

Through these core services and others, CILs strive to empower and encourage people with disabilities to fully participate in their communities. Our intent is to allow any person with a disability to determine the path of their own life.
